Beyond Cricket: A Life in Many Worlds

C D Gopinath

From college cricket to a place within three years in the first Indian team in history to win a test match, C D Gopinath had a fairytale start to his cricket career. One of the most talented batsmen of his era in the country, Gopinath followed that first with many more firsts in diverse fields—including the position of Chairman of a leading British firm in India.

The several positions of eminence he held included those of Chairman of the national cricket selection panel, Sheriff of Madras, and Honorary Consul for Norway in Madras.

An all-round sportsman, he also forged a remarkable partnership with Comala Gopinath—in life as in tennis doubles, and at the bridge table. His travels abroad brought him many life-long friendships, while he never forgot his friends from his happy childhood.

The book is written by C D Gopinath along with V Ramnarayan, a prominent off spinner in the 1970s, representing Hyderabad and South Zone in first class cricket. An author and translator, he has been the editor of Sruti, a leading performing arts monthly, and adjunct faculty at the Asian College of Journalism. His autobiographical Third Man, A Life In Cricket is perhaps his best known work, while The Sweet Salt of Tamil, which he translated from a modern Tamil classic by Tho Paramasivan, is his latest offering.
